ONE WEEK INTO OUR STAY


The Best Center is a gathering place for Christians on Sunday afternoon.  We have a Bible Class from 4:00-5:00 and a worship service from 5:00-6:00 pm.  All of our students are in attendance plus others from Phnom Penh.  We foreigners are issued earphones so that we can receive the messages through a translator.  Each year that we come we can see growth in the members here; better singing and better lessons.
Tom will be teaching a class session next week.

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings in January Loren Hollingsworth will be speaking to the group concerning the Old Testament Sacrificial System and what that might mean for us today.  He is a very knowledgeable Bible teacher.  Veasna interprets his lessons for the Cambodian listeners.  He is a great teacher for the Cambodians as well.  What a joy to be with him again.



Try Sunghy (far left) joined us last Sunday.  He was one of Helen's former students and it was so good to get to visit with him.  His life has taken exciting turns in his journalistic talents.  We had such a good visit.  We had such good visits last year.  He brought Phnom Penh current news articles and we would discuss the pros and cons.  I learned as much as he did.
Also note that Julie is holding Sokneang and Piseth's new baby.  She seems to be a very content baby.  




The Phnom Penh congregation has moved to a new location since last year.  We walk approximately a mile to this location for services there.  It was good to see friends that we have met for several years now.

This lady brings her family to the church building each week on their only mode of transportation.  This is not uncommon in Cambodia.  We see entire families loaded on their motos.



The businesses, homes, churches, etc. on these narrow streets are 'gated residences'.  Their vehicles are parked inside the gates.  The motos that are driven to the church pull inside the gate to be parked during services.

CAMBODIAN BIBLE INSTITUTE, CBI

Rich and Rhonda (Julie's sister) Dolan direct the Cambodian Bible Institute, which is a preacher training school associated with Sunset School of Preaching in the US.  This is a new location for them.  On the Sunday that the wedding was taking place in front of the BEST Center we held afternoon worship services at CBI.  It takes only a few minutes to walk from one to the other.  Two Cambodian men are teaching at this facility as well as Rich Dolan.  We met on the ground floor, which is also their classroom.  There are two higher floors which house sleeping quarters for the students and staff.  There is a kitchen beyond the classroom.  The students there are involved in worship services at the University congregation every Sunday and they conducted the services this Sunday.  It is so good to see young people being taught and trained to present the Word.  Tom and I were glad that we were able to visit this place before time to leave.

WORSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP TIMES

 Bible Study and Worship are a very important part of the BEST CENTER.  After all BEST stands for "Bible, Education, Study, Training" Center.  All of the students have Bible Classes 2 hours per day with their Khmer teachers.  They study through the entire Bible during their 4 years at the Center and go home with Notebooks that they can use later.   Each Thursday evening the christians in the area are invited to dinner together followed by a singing period.  Once per month they turn part of that into prayer time together in groups.  On Sunday evening there is a worship time together with class study, followed by worship time with communion, singing and a Bible lesson. Sundays mornings we worship at the Phnom Penh Congregation about a half mile from the BEST Center and meet other Christians.    While the University Education is important to the students at the BEST CENTER, their Bible study is high on the priority list.  There is much required of them in learning scr

CELEBRATING WITH VALENTINE THEME

Every Friday Tom and I divert from English study to do something fun.  Since Valentine Day in the US was on Friday, what an opportunity.  Valentine Day is not celebrated in Cambodia.  We bought Oreo and some white sandwich cookies about the size  of Oreos.  Some decorator frosting was mixed us and colored ready to decorate cookies for the evening meal.  Each of our groups participated as well as the 3 new students who study English with Dara since we cannot visit with them very well yet.  We watched a video about decorating with zipper bags by cutting a small opening in a corner.    We were concerned how this was going to work, but it was great.  The corner is reinforced with tape and none of them burst.  The students were quite creative and seemed to enjoy the new experience.  The Youtube video was in English with English captions as well.  Some new words were learned as well as some new skills.
